Women's Status in The Indian Society
"You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women."
-Jawaharlal Nehru
So, what is the status of women in India? The life of women has been much better than before. In today's world, women have a lot of opportunities in everyday life as well as in business and political life. But, still, India is a man dominated society, where women are often seen as inferior to men. However, even though India is moving away from the male-dominated culture, discrimination based on gender is still visible in many parts of India.
After independence, we got freedom but, now, we live in a society according to logical, theological, and cultural norms and rules, can we still claim that we are free? Women are judged based on what she does and wears. Society still considers them as not capable of earning money; they are seen as economically and emotionally dependent on men. But, on the bright side, they are fighting and proving them wrong. They are being independent. The sad news is not everyone is lucky. The veil system ( pardah system ) are still whispered in small villages of India.
On the other hand, violent cases against women are increasing every day. The violence against women in India like sexual assaults, cases of rape, throwing of acid still exists. Most of it goes unnoticed due to a lack of attention. Women have been regarded as the symbol of spirituality in our scriptures. Yet, they have been treated badly and still do. They get both physically and mentally abused and the worst part is that they don't tell it, they are silent. Ending these crimes against women is still a challenge.
But the question arises, to what extent women enjoy freedom in and outside the home in the matter relating to their education, marriage, and occupation? How far their opinion is honored?
To what extent society allows women for widow remarriage, participation in social activities, and forbid veil system?*_ These questions may remain unanswered by society but I am grateful that most people are changing their perspective on women and the changes that are about to happen regarding women and their security. India is not completely safe for a woman and against crimes for the same but the whole world is not that dark, good people still exist.
I hope my words make you understand the situation that women go through their everyday life in India.
But, I believe one day, India will be a lot better than it is today.
